Art depicts war in a way that no other medium can. Sure, writing can give an accurate description of events that occurred, and you can hear stories, or a lecture in history class. But there's nothing like seeing to evoke the appropriate emotion when dealing with this topic. There is a level of detachment when you aren't seeing something. With art, it is there. In front of you. Seeing a painting of one dead soldier may evoke more emotion then a statement in a newspaper about 9 million dead. The difference is one is a mere number, while the other is a life you are seeing disappear right before your eyes.
Art can also serve as a reminder of war. Wars that have been forgotten, but nonetheless have hurt many many people. In this case, art serves as a record of what happened, as writings would do. People who have been affected by the war want others to remember it too, and feel what they've felt. That's why they make the art.
Photojournalism is an art form as well in my opinion. It is visual, and evokes emotion in the same way as a painting would. The thing I like about photography is that it is brutally honest. Unlike a painting or drawing which could be romanticized or exaggerated, a photograph is raw. It is what it is. However, it may lack the connection that the artist who may have been affected by the war has with their artwork.
